Additional Information

Head Injury Support is a charity that supports people with an acquired brain injury as well as carers of people with a brain injury. Our purpose is to provide a social outlet for these people through a range of leisure, skills development and recreational activities. The impact of brain injury is devastating on the individual and the family. Many feel that once they leave hospital they are isolated from society and many are no longer able to work. Having access to the services of Head Injury Support helps overcome this isolation. It also helps them develop new friendships, skills, improves social interaction skills and builds their confidence to re-engage with society. Carers can also feel overwhelmed by the responsibility of caring with someone with a brain injury and the charity provides them with regular opportunities to build friendships and support networks with other carers through carer specific activities. Through providing a range of weekly activities for brain injury survivors the carers are in turn receiving much needed respite from their caring role. People using the services of our charity have acquired a brain injury through traffic accidents, falls, brain aneurysm, assault, brain tumour, epilepsy or meningitis. These types of injuries mean that their lives can change dramatically in an instant. Currently Head Injury Support provides services across the Southern Trust, our Hub in located in Kildare Street in Newry which provides services and support to our members Monday to Thursday 11am – 4pm. We also have a weekly Friday night drop in service for the whole family and twice a month our survivors enjoy a Big Night Out with their partners and other survivors. We also offer a monthly carers meeting to allow carers to engage with other carers. We have established weekly support groups in Armagh, Craigavon and Dungannon to make our services more accessible to people. Head Injury Support welcomes all new members: brain injury survivors, carers, families and volunteers. Feel free to give us a call or drop into our Newry Centre for more information. Would you like to become a volunteer with Head Injury Support? As a charitable organisation we depend on volunteers to continue helping brain injury survivors and their families. We need volunteers to help with organising activities, events and fundraising. If you can help in any way please contact us. You can be assured that the experience of volunteering with Head Injury Support will be a rewarding and fulfilling experience.
