The Western Trust Community Brain Injury Service is managed by a Brain Injury Specialist Nurse and organised into two locality based teams in Enniskillen and Derry.
The service has input from: Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Social Work and Clinical Psychology. Each team member contributes specific skills to the multidisciplinary assessment and rehabilitation process. Generic roles and tasks are shared between team members. We see our role as providing a rehabilitation service including assessment, treatment and training to adults with an acquired brain injury, their families and carers. We primarily consider people with traumatic brain injury for the service. Those with other acquired non-progressive brain injuries will be considered when there are significant cognitive, emotional and/or behavioural sequelae on assessment.
We aim to reduce where possible, the range of decrements in health, functioning and disability caused by brain injury, and to promote family, social, educational and vocational reintegration. Furthermore we try to be a specialist resource to other services by offering advice, consultancy and specialist training on the complex nature of brain injury and the needs of those who have acquired a brain injury, their family and carers.
To achieve this we have established links with other agencies including relevant voluntary and statutory organisations, and education facilities. Referrals are accepted from any source, including self-referral.
