ULSTER Supported Employment Ltd (USEL) was established in 1962 and is the largest supporter of people with disabilities in Northern Ireland.
The not-for-profit organisation’s vision and values are to be the lead provider in helping people with disabilities gain employment. USEL strive to be a sustainable, people centred organisation that adds value through respect for others and commitment to excellence. According to USEL, “By employing people with a disability we are able to create a more dynamic workplace, where everyone is able to add value to each other’s and customer’s lives every day.” To do this, USEL manages a range of employment programmes on behalf of the Department for Employment and Learning (DEL) and EU that helps this demographic move into or return to employment. The programmes include:
STRIDE (Support and Training to Realise Individual Development and Employment) This project is part funded through the Northern Ireland European Social Fund 2014-2020 Investment for Jobs and Growth Programme and the Department for Employment and Learning”. The STRIDE programme is specifically designed to help unemployed people with disabilities and health-related conditions to gain the employability skills, vocational qualifications and relevant work experience required by employers. STRIDE will provide participants with training and support to help them gain employment, employer recognised skills and qualifications and access to a wide range of employment opportunities.
Workable (NI) is a flexible programme of support which assists people with disabilities who face significant barriers to work to find or sustain paid employment. USEL is also contracted to provide disability support to participants on programmes such as Training for Success and Apprenticeship NI.
Almost 2,000 disabled people are supported by USEL each year in more than 700 companies. The support provided through the programmes is aimed at developing the client within their chosen role(s), through mentoring and training as well as monitoring and evaluating their progress during their time on the programmes so that they become fully integrated into the post and assist them to become independent and competent in their role.
USEL also have our own Training Department ASPIRE Training that has premises in Belfast City Centre (Cathedral Quarter), as well as training rooms available at our Portadown and Omagh Offices. For those clients unable to get to/or outside these venues, alternative arrangements are made.
