Additional Information

The aim of these therapeutic communities is to provide a safe, secure and stable environment where patients with a severe mental illness can find a structured setting to engage in communal living with an emphasis on exploring the relationships with themselves and others. The provision of a ‘holding’ and ‘containing’ environment means that patients have an opportunity to experience an understanding environment which helps each individual gain stability in their emotional lives and so help them towards independent living. Threshold’s therapeutic communities are part of the national network of the ‘Association of Therapeutic Communities’ whereby peer reviews involving staff and users, visit other services to ensure quality assurance standards. In all of our peer reviews for the last several years, Threshold has achieved all of the benchmark standards established by the Association of Therapeutic Communities. This 12 bedded project is based on the Somerton Road in North Belfast and caters mainly for older residents between 45 - 75 years of age. Referrals are made through Social Workers and Community Mental Health Teams and also through hospital psychiatric services.
