Additional Information
The Family Nurse Partnership, a programme offering support to first time mums-to-be under 20 years old.
Family Nurse Partnership (FNP) is an intensive support programme offered from pregnancy until the baby is two.
What happens during pregnancy and in the first years of a baby’s life has a major influence on his or her subsequent behaviour, education, employment, health and other life chances.
The programme consists of over 60 home visits over the two year period lasting around 60-90 minutes and offering support over six main areas; physical health, maternal role, environment, family and friends, health and human services and life course development. This support is in addition to their routine midwife and hospital appointments during pregnancy.
This innovative programme achieves remarkable outcomes for both parents and children. These include:
Improvements in antenatal health
Improved parenting practices and behaviour
Reductions in children’s injuries, neglect and abuse
Fewer subsequent pregnancies and greater intervals between births
Increased maternal employment and reduced welfare use
Increases in father’s involvement
If you know a young woman who you feel could benefit from this programme, firstly check she is eligible.
