Additional Information
What happens during pregnancy and in the first years of a baby’s life has a major influence on his or her subsequent behaviour, education, employment, health and other life chances.
Family Nurse Partnership (FNP) is an intensive preventive programme for first time young parents. It runs from early pregnancy until the child is two. This licensed programme, developed at the University of Colorado, is thoroughly evaluated and has tangible outcomes evidenced through 30 years of research.
Parents receive weekly/fortnightly home visits from a specially trained nurse. The approach and materials used are rooted in theories of attachment, self-efficacy and human ecology.
This innovative programme achieves remarkable outcomes for both parents and children. These include:
Improvements in antenatal health
Improved parenting practices and behaviour
Reductions in children’s injuries, neglect and abuse
Fewer subsequent pregnancies and greater intervals between births
Increased maternal employment and reduced welfare use
Increases in father’s involvement
If you know a young woman who you feel could benefit from this programme, firstly check she is eligible.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
≤19 years at last menstrual period
First baby (previous miscarriage, stillbirth, termination still eligible)
No later than 28 weeks gestation (60% required before 16 weeks)
No planned adoption
