Additional Information

FightED (previously CARED) is a charity that supports families affected by eating disorders in Northern Ireland.

Our aim is to support, empower and educate parents and carers who have a loved one with an eating disorder.

We offer support, advice, and guidance to parents and carers with a loved one who has an eating disorder, as well as offering the world-renowned New Maudsley Method for the first time in Northern Ireland.

CARED (Caring About Recovery from Eating Disorders) was founded by two families from Northern Ireland, both of which had a daughter who suffered seriously from an eating disorder. Due to the lack of adequate services or facilities in Northern Ireland, both of these families had to fight to have their daughters treated by specialist units in London.

Eating disorders not only affect the individual, but often all the people close to them too. Family and friends are often very worried and want to help, but don’t know what to say or do, and it can feel at times that everything you do is wrong. Parents are often at a loss as to how to deal with the ED on a daily basis. Mealtimes are a battlefield, and the ED brings a lot of stress, tension and difficulties into the family home. Eating disorders can tear families apart, and it can often feel like there is no help, support or guidance for families.

While one of the girls was in hospital, her family was offered to attend the The New Maudsley Method training course, and the family mark this as the turning point in their daughters recovery, and describe it as a lifeaver for the family.

The New Maudsley Model is a world-renowned carers course, now offered in many countries around the world. It was developed by the South London and Maudsley Hospital, and it is a course that is designed to educate and empower families who have a loved one suffering from an ED. It has been offered to families and carers on mainland UK for over 20 years, and the aim of CARED is to bring this course to the families in NI for the first time.

On the New Maudsley course, parents will be taught about eating disorders, enhanced communication skills, the psychology of change, how to promote recovery in their loved one, and many more skills. This should leave parents feeling better equipped to manage what is often a difficult and stressful situation, and also improve home life.
