The Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman (NIPSO) investigates unresolved complaints about public bodies in Northern Ireland. Our service is free, independent and impartial.

In our investigations we check to see if a public body acted properly or whether someone was treated unfairly. When things go wrong, we suggest what can be done to put things right. NIPSO directly cover services that matter to families including;

  • Health and Social Care (Hospitals, GP’s and social work services),
  • Education - Schools, Colleges and Universities and Education Authority, and
  • Social Housing.

NIPSO can also investigate where we think there might be systemic service failures, even if we haven’t received a complaint. We call these our “Own Initiative” investigations. To carry out one of these investigations, we decide if it would be in the public interest and that it would help improve public services.

Before you make a complaint to us you should normally have:

  • Complained directly to the organisation
  • Completed the organisation’s complaints process
  • Received a final response to your complaint from the organisation.

Our offices are now open to the public from 10am – 12pm, Monday to Friday. Please contact us for an appointment.
