The Child Bereavement Service(CBS) was started in 1998. The service offers a wide range of consultancy (irrespective of geographical location) via an advice line to any adult who is concerned about a child or young person following the death of a loved one. This ranges from parents, carers and other professionals. Where appropriate, we signpost to other follow-on services.
CBS is also funded to offer direct therapeutic support to children, young people and their families following traumatic bereavement in the Belfast and Northern Trust areas (ages 4-18yrs).
Bereavement by suicide is particularly traumatic for children, young people and their families. The children and young people can be seen individually, in a peer group or as a family group. Families are also offered support in their care an understanding of how best to support their children and young people.
Group work opportunities, where appropriate, can be offered to the key adults supporting a child/young person.
Barnardo’s CBS advice line offers professional support and guidance to any adult concerned about a bereaved child or young person.
The advice line is operated by experienced, skilled and professionally qualified staff, responding to parents, carers, social workers, teachers and GP’s amongst others. Email: catherine.meighan@barnardos.org.uk.
