Additional Information
Most adopted children are ‘looked after’ by the Trust prior to adoption. Adopted children may have been in the care of the Trust for a range of different reasons: parental neglect; risks of abuse, or because parents are experiencing long term mental health problems which impact on their ability to parent properly.
Many children who need adoption are likely to have had at least one change of carer since birth. Some children will have experienced many moves and instability in their young lives. We need local adoptive families who can meet the needs of these children in our care and help them to feel secure, wanted and loved.
As children have many different needs, the Western Trust needs many different kinds of families to look after them - the Trust welcomes adoptive families for all social, economic, religious and cultural backgrounds. Applicants must meet some criteria, however, you don’t have to have children of your own, you can continue working, single people or married couples and families in any income bracket can apply to adopt.
There is no typical adoptive parent in the same way there is no typical child in need of a permanent home. We see each individual child and strive to match their needs to adoptive families. Adoption can truly transform a child’s life forever.
The process of becoming an adoptive parent is intense, however, this shouldn’t put anyone off considering it - it’s easy to take the first step. The Trust is keen to hear from anyone who can provide a substitute family for children with complex and challenging needs, ranging in ages.
