Sure Start Ards is a community based programme which works with parents and children up to four years to promote health and development.

Sure Start Ards provides practical and emotional home based support for pregnant mums and new parents.

Workers will visit once or twice weekly for two hours for about six to eight weeks.

Referrals from a Community Midwife, Health Visitor, Sure Start Health Visitor or other health professional is required to avail of this service.

SureStart Ards also offers:

Infant Massage – class runs for five weeks and is for babies eight weeks to crawling stage. Baby massage can help to ease colic and wind, promote relaxation, improve sleep, help with slow weight gain, stimulate the senses and enhance bonding and attachement

Positive Parenting – is a programme that offers parents practical advice on how to handle children’s behaviour in a positive way. It offers alternative measures to discipline children whilst maintaining the child’s self esteem and parent/child relationship. It provides a forum for parents to offload problems that they are experiencing, it shows them that other parents are having the same or similar difficulties and it offers a new approach to tackling challenging behaviour

Breakfast Clubs – are run all year round. Parents are offered a drink and toast and children also get breakfast and the opportunity to meet and engage with other children and experience new toys and activities.

Exercise Classes – exercise classes are facilitated by an instructor from Peninsula Healthy Living. The activities vary from aerobics to boxercise to circuits. The classes operate during term time

Breastfeeding Support – this is a weekly activity which runs all year round and is facilitated by Sure Start Health Visitor. It provides a comfortable environment for breast feeding mums to come for support and meet new people, get their baby weighed if they wish and have a chat

Bumps and Babies – this weekly group runs all year. It is facilitated by the Sure Start Health Visitor and offers a safe environment for new mums or mums to be to get advice, share experiences and meet new people

Breast & Cervical Screening Awareness – a programme designed to help women talk about the reasons why they do not avail of the screening services available and why it is imperative that they do. It also teaches them how to self examine their own breasts, explains what happens during a mammogram and a cervical smear test

Me Time – ‘Me Time’ is a course which looks at the importance of setting time aside for you. During the sessions the reasons are explored why people don’t and ways in which to achieve this set time

Cook It – provides a very practical approach to learning during the course participants will cook recipes from each of the four main food groups and learn how easy cooking from scratch is and discuss the importance of each food group

Home Safety Training – this course exlains the risks that children can face within the home and how to reduce risks of the most common types of accidents occurring

Chatterbox Group – Speech & Language – this group is to provide advice, support and training to parents/carers of the children alongside providing a more structured opportunity to develop the children’s speech and language skills. There is a referral system in place for children to attend the Chatterbox Group

First Aid Training – Baby Lifesavers – this is a course run by St John’s Ambulance
Mellow Babies – this is to help mothers deal with their own emotional difficulties relating to their own experiences of having been parented. This is to support them in becoming more responsive parents. A referral from a Health Visitor is required
